College Republicans 'illegal immigrant game' incites protests
Student members of the College Republicans at elite New York University are sponsoring a game called "Find the Illegal Immigrant." The game is a mock hunt for illegal immigrants. A student wears a tag during the course of the day identifying him or herself as an illegal immigrant, and the first student acting as an immigration enforcement agent to find the student wins a prize.
College Republicans at the school have stated they are seeking to raise awareness of the issue of illegal immigration. Other students say the game is embarrassing and racist. Around 60 student have signed up to play the game today, while about 500 students have signed up to protest the game.
NYU released a statement to the media saying that the College Republicans have a right to free speech and they encourage the kind of debate that the publicity stunt has inspired on the campus.
Clips on the "game" from CNN and a local CBS News affiliate can be viewed below. Further reports on the story can be read at Washington Square News, a student-run paper at NYU that is tracking the story.
