Family of Virginia Tech shooting victim buys guns without permit
There have been as many as eight shooting sprees across the country during the past few weeks. CBS News’ correspondent Leslie Stahl found that gun and ammunition sales have increased since the election. The idea that Barack Obama wants to take people’s guns may be one reason for the increase.
Omaha Samaha, whose sister Reema killed in the Virginia Tech shootings, testified before Virginia lawmakers that he was able to buy a dozen guns at a gun show without any background check. One of the guns was “[a] Glock that was stronger than the one used to kill my sister,” he explained. He was never required to show any identification.
The ability to buy guns at guns shows without a background check is known as the “gun show loophole.” The Virginia legislature debated if the loophole should be closed in February. The measure lost by 2 votes.
