McCain: Karzai may be ‘assassinated’ if US withdraws
Sen. John McCain supported much of President Barack Obama’s plan for a surge of troops in Afghanistan but found himself at odds with the plan to set a date to begin withdrawal. McCain believes withdrawal will create a dire situation that could lead to government instability and the death of the Afghan president. “Hamid Karzai knows very well that if U.S. troops leave he will be leaving shortly thereafter or find himself probably assassinated,” McCain told CBS in a response to President Obama’s announcement Tuesday night.
