Paul Ryan: GOP budget ‘saves’ Medicare (by gutting it)
In anticipation of the release of the House Republican 10-year budget plan Tuesday, its architect Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) unveiled a 3-minute video making the case for trillions in spending cuts, including drastic cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.
“Our budget saves and strengthens these programs,” Ryan says in the video, explaining the magnitude of the debt crisis. “It fixes the flaws in Medicare and Medicaid that have made rising costs nearly impossible to check.”
By “saves” and “fixes the flaws,” he means his plan essentially privatizes Medicare for Americans currently under 55 and caps their benefit payouts at roughly $15,000. It eliminates the guarantee on Medicaid benefits and turns it into a program of block grants for states.
