Huntsman: Anti-Mormon pastor is a ‘moron’
Republican presidential candidate and Mormon Jon Huntsman on Monday called a Dallas pastor a “moron” for claiming that Mormonism was a false religion.
TV evangelist and prominent religious leader Pastor Robert Jeffress called Mormonism a “cult” at a conservative gathering on Friday, just minutes after introducing Texas Gov. Rick Perry. His comments were aimed at another Republican presidential hopeful and Mormon, Mitt Romney.
“The fact that, you know, some moron can stand up and make a comment like that, you know, first of all, it’s outrageous,” Huntsman told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “Second of all, the fact that we are spending so much time discussing it makes it even worse.”
Perry previously said he did not believe Mormonism was a cult, but Huntsman said Perry should “make an immediate and decisive break” with the pastor.
“You know, anyone who has associated with someone willing to make those comments ought to stand up and distance themselves in very bold language and that hasn’t been done,” Huntsman added.
Republican presidential candidates Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann both refused to say if Romney was a Christian during an interview Sunday on CNN.
