Rep. Keith Ellison: ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protesters ‘absolutely right’
Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota, Chair of the Progressive Caucus, said he supported the growing “Occupy” demonstrations and would be “more than happy” to advance their agenda.
“It’s not really leaderless, it just has a lot of leaders,” he told The UpTake in an interview. “People are sick of some Moses type figure coming and telling them what to do, or what to believe, or what to feel.”
“I’m real comfortable with where the Occupy movement is.”
But the congressman warned that conservatives were looking for ways to accuse the movement of being violent or unruly.
“In Washington what I’ve heard from a lot of people is that, ‘oh, well, if the movement turns violent, maybe it would be wise not to be connected to it.’ I’m like, you know, lets get rid of that super play-it-safe cowardly chicken style. Lets lead with what we believe for a change, and say these people are absolutely right to get out there and express their outrage with these conditions.”
“Sometimes politicians don’t see the light until they feel the heat,” Ellison added. “This movement is offering the heat.”
