Trooper uncovers 160 pounds of pot during traffic stop
If you’re hoping to smuggle hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of marijuana in a rented van, you probably shouldn’t violate routine traffic laws.
A state trooper allegedly found 160 pounds of marijuana after pulling over a van on Interstate 84 for an unsafe lane change and speeding, according to the Massachusetts State Police.
The trooper could smell a strong marijuana odor coming from inside the vehicle and he requested assistance from a K-9 unit, which lead to the discovery of the pot.
Possession of small amounts of marijuana, under one ounce, in Massachusetts is only a civil violation subject to a $100 fine. Marijuana decriminalization was approved by voters in a 2009 referendum.
But because of the amount in this case, the drug traffickers face about 5 to 12 years in prison if found guilty.
