Filmmaker James Cameron tweets from deepest point on earth
Filmmaker James Cameron, famed for his cinematic hits Titanic and Avatar, has achieved another historic first, becoming one of just a few people to explore the depths of the Marianas Trench, and the first to do so alone.
The filmmaker, who is also a National Geographic explorer, reached the deepest point of the Pacific Ocean trench late Sunday night in a specially designed one-person craft that was fired like a bullet from a ship above.
“Just arrived at the ocean’s deepest pt.,” he published on Twitter as soon as he reached bottom. “Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can’t wait to share what I’m seeing w/ you.”
His his ship was equipped with an array of LED lights and 3D cameras, virtually guaranteeing that whatever footage he’s returned with will be spectacular — or at least of great interest to science.
