Boy convicted of religiously harassing pagan McDonald’s employee
In what appears to be the first case of its kind, a teenager in the United Kingdom has been convicted of religiously harassing a female pagan who worked at McDonalds, according to the Telegraph.
The unnamed 16-year-old boy from Lawford, north east Essex pleaded guilty to religiously aggravated harassment. Pagan is a legally recognized religious affiliation in the U.K. and includes a wide variety of faiths.
The boy heard others call the McDonald’s employee a pagan and had been going to the restaurant to harassing her about her beliefs for more than six weeks.
“The defendant has found out others have called her a Pagan and he has jumped on the bandwagon,” the prosecutor explained.
“He was soon made aware of the effect it was having by the victim and senior staff. He knew this was unacceptable and then continued. He accepted in interview he did it to annoy her.”
The boy has been ordered to report to a youth workers panel, which could require him to do unpaid work. He is also prohibited from contacting his victim until November.
