Bloomberg interrupts Coney Island speech to ask ‘Who wrote this sh*t?’
In a pun-filled speech that had even the stuffed hot dog character face-palming, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s performance at yesterday’s Coney Island hot dog contest weigh-in prompted even the mayor to curse.
His outburst, captured on the video below, followed several sentences of cringe-worthy puns like, “Now, let me be perfectly frank, this is one of my favorite traditions. I relish it so much…” at which point his speech was interrupted by audible groans from the audience.
He added later, “They’ll come to find out if Joey ‘Jaws’ Chestnut will swallow the competition and take home a sixth-straight title; if first-ever female champ Sonya Thomas can top her record of 40 H-D-Bs, to use the technical term (hot dog buns); or if one of their dogged pursuers will finally ‘ketchup’ cut the mustard and be pronounced ‘Wiener.’ No question, it’s going to be a dogfight.”
He then said, “Just think of how many we got into one sentence, that’s really impressive. Who wrote this shit?” prompting laughter from the crowd.
Chestnut won the competition on July 4, 2012 by swallowing a personal record of 68 hotdogs (one short of competitor Tareku Kobayashi’s non-Nathan’s record of 69), while Thomas beat her personal best and the women’s world record by downing 45.
