UConn standoff ends in suicide
An overnight standoff at a University of Connecticut campus ended at dawn Tuesday morning after the suspect killed himself, NBC News reports.
Police had been negotiating with the unidentified 30-year-old man after he was spotted late Monday evening on the university’s Avery Point campus in Groton, Connecticut, threatening to hurt himself with a gun. The man’s family had alerted authorities earlier that night, saying he was “despondent and armed.”
WTNH-TV reported that the man was a Groton resident, but not a student. The campus was evacuated, though students at a high school oceanography camp taking place on a part of the school away from negotiations were guarded by police during the standoff.
According to the Associated Press, police say they negotiated with the man for hours via cell phone before he threw it away, eventually turning the gun on himself. The campus was reopened at 8 a.m. EST Tuesday morning.
