When 30 Rock’s Your Evidence That Women Have Too Much….
There were many, many odious things about this Stephen Marche piece in Esquire (linked Jezebel’s riffing because don’t want to reward Esquire for trolling), especially his sadface that rape rates are down, because that clearly means women aren’t kept properly afraid of men as we should be. But one quote in this baffling rant that belongs on a half-literate MRA site instead of a real magazine really shows how intellectually empty the entire piece is:
As women on television have become smarter and more powerful with every passing year, culminating in Liz Lemon of 30 Rock, the men on television become dumber and grosser and more useless. Homer Simpson becomes stupide [sic] every year. In one episode of Family Guy, Peter Griffin is actually declared “mentally retarded.”
His example of how women are triumphant over men on TV is to mention a female character whose primary relationship in life is with her male mentor who, while having odious politics, nonetheless is smarter than pretty much everyone around him and who is especially important to Liz, because she struggles to make a single important decision without his help. And this is his evidence that women have this widespread contempt for men: A female character who is over 40 and still depends on her father figure mentor for guidance.
I guess when you expect women to fall down in fearful worship of your almighty cock every time you enter a room, being looked up to just isn’t enough. And if you expect women to only open their mouths to suck that almighty cock, any expression of an opinion at all must be absolutely terrifying. But Marche? That really sounds like a personal problem, and not any indictment of society’s creeping matriarchy.
