You Didn’t Rhyme That
The burning question of the day is whether Nicki Minaj is a Republican.
She’s probably not.
In the fifth track, “Mercy,” posted online, Minaj raps, “I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney, you lazy b—-es is f—ing up the economy.”
It’s unclear whether Minaj is speaking any bit of truth in the rap, as she often blurs the lines of reality in her music. And the following lyric in the song is non-political: “Out in Miami, I be chillin’ with a zombie.”
Here are the full lyrics to the verse, which I obtained through a very difficult reporting method called “Googling”:
Fuck fuck your Lambo
Fuck fuck your Merce
I got more money
In in my fucking purse
Court side you in the C Section
I’m with them bloods you-you with the C Section
In Malibu I’m bout a sea section
And all these bitches is my sons
I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney
You lazy bitches is fucking up the economy
Out in Miami I be chilling with a zombie
Diablo alejandro de mello gandhi
Besides the fact that she kind of hammers the whole “C-Section” thing into the ground (which is an increasing problem with Minaj these days, but that’s a different story), the point, as Matt Yglesias says, is that Nicki Minaj is really goddamn rich.
The “zombie” line almost certainly refers to everyone’s favorite Miami face-eater from earlier this summer. Although I feel like a terrible Rap Genius commenter right now, she’s hectoring her haters (the “lazy bitches”) about how terrible they are, like a Republican lecturing the poors.
What’s funny about this whole thing isn’t people’s inability to understand metaphor in hip-hop, it’s that this was the exact thing that happened with Obama’s “you didn’t build that” quote. I don’t know what’s so hard about understanding the complexities of famous black people using multiple sentences to express ideas, but it’s something we as a nation must address before Neil deGrasse Tyson is imprisoned for threatening to blow up the sun.
