Missouri pastor’s anti-LGBT tirade has surprise ending
Earlier this year, Rev. Dr. Phil Snyder Brentwood Christian Church appeared before the Springfield, Missouri city council to discuss his views on whether the council should add sexual orientation to the classes of people protected under the city’s non-discrimination clause. According to the Springfield News-Leader, nearly 200 residents showed up to a hearing in August, hoping to express their views for or against the changes.
“I worry about the future of our city,” Rev. Snyder began, “Any accurate reading of the Bible should make it clear that gay rights goes against the plain truth of the word of God.”
However, what first appears to be a furious tirade against LGBT people in fact turns out to be something quite different when Snyder revealed that he was reading verbatim from the minutes of a Springfield city council hearing from fifty years ago on the topic of racial integration.
“I guess the arguments I’ve been hearing around Springfield lately have sounded so similar to these that I got them confused,” he said. “I hope you will not make the same mistake. I hope you will stand on the right side of history.”
