Police: 10-year-old in stolen van wrecks five cars in less than a block
Philadelphia police said Monday that a 10-year-old boy will face auto theft charges as a juvenile after he stole a van and wrecked five other vehicles before coming to a stop less than a block away.
The incident, which occurred Sunday around noon, was caught on a nearby store’s surveillance camera. Footage shows a furniture delivery man stepping away from a white van, apparently leaving the keys inside.
As video rolled, the boy jumped in the driver’s seat and attempted to speed away, but only made it around the corner before slamming into several nearby parked cars. He then jumped from the cabin and tried to run away, but witnesses cornered the boy and kept him there until police arrived.
The young car thief’s name was not given to reporters, but a witness told NBC Philadelphia that the boy claimed he was “forced to steal.” Police told the station that the juvenile had committed prior offenses.
Police are still investigating the incident. Nobody was hurt.
