South Carolina woman caught trying to steal research ship in California
Police in San Diego, California caught a missing South Carolina woman on Tuesday after she tried to steal a 120-foot research ship while its occupants were still on board.
According to KNSD-TV, security at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography called authorities after spotting the woman untying the boat’s dock lines around 2 a.m.
San Diego police Lt. Mark Bennett told U-T San Diego that the unidentified woman slipped past security by jumping over the fence into the facility.
“She was apparently suffering from mental distress and was looking to get back to South Carolina,” Bennett said, before security caught her.
The woman was detained by San Diego Harbor Police before being transferred to a local mental facility. Police said she does not face criminal charges.
