75-year-old woman finds childhood essay in used bookstore’s Bible
A 75-year-old woman from San Clemente, California recently made an astonishing discovery inside a used Bible she purchased from a local store: an essay she wrote as a Girl Scout in Kentucky, at the tender age of 10.
Marion Shurtleff still has not figured out how the letter managed to return to her across a distance of more than 2,000 miles and 65 long years, but she told CBS Los Angeles this week that she’s determined to find out.
Upon finding the document, “I hollered,” she said. “I started shaking. I cried. I had goose bumps.”
The used book store has not been any help, so she reached out to the media hoping someone who remembers her old scout leader, Bonnie Jean Edwards, will come forward with a clue.
“How did it get here?” she wondered. “I think there’s got to be a tie to the person who kept this. Why would they keep it? Maybe it was sent to me for a reason.”
