John Oliver mocks unbelievably shady Texas GOP for ‘aborting’ Wendy Davis’ filibuster
Anyone who watched The Daily Show on Tuesday night “should not have done that,” according to The Daily Show host John Oliver.
They made a “big mistake” by missing the incredible filibuster conducted by State Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth), he explained. Davis had planned a 13-hour filibuster on Tuesday to prevent a final vote on an extreme anti-abortion bill before the legislature’s special session ended. The legislation would close all but five abortion clinics in the state.
“Is five abortion clinics in 269,000 square miles really so bad?” Oliver mockingly wondered. “Think about it. Texas will still have three more abortion clinics than it has Six Flags amusement parks.”
“So if Senator Davis can talk 13 hours, Texas women won’t have to drive 13 hours to get an abortion,” he explained. “Ok. How hard can that be?”
Davis was required to stand upright the entire length of her filibuster. She was prohibited from sitting, eating, using the bathroom, touch her desk, receive aid from other person, or stray off topic.
The Republican-led Senate eventually “aborted” the filibuster by ruling Davis strayed off topic by talking about Planned Parenthood and sonograms. Oliver remarked that saying that was off topic was like saying, “Talk to me about White Castle, but don’t mention diarrhea.”
As if that wasn’t shady enough, Republicans in the Texas Senate voted on the bill after midnight, but changed the court records to indicate the vote took place before midnight. They eventually confessed that the vote took place after the session had ended.
“They simply believe that if late one night when you’re swept away by your emotions, you make a stupid mistake, you should always have a chance to fix it later and not have to live with the consequences,” Oliver explained.
