Watch people who haven’t read the books freak out over Game of Thrones’ ‘Red Wedding’ scene
If you found Sunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones traumatizing, you weren’t the only one, as evidenced by a compilation video of filmed reactions to the show’s gruesome “Red Wedding” scene.
The episode, which depicts wedding festivities that turn bloody, shocked and enraged many viewers. As Entertainment Weekly wrote, “That many fans are so incensed will probably come as some relief to Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who were intent on preserving the surprise of the sequence for viewers as much as possible given that the major character-killing twist from George R.R. Martin’s 13-year-old novel A Storm of Swords was only a mouse-click away for the curious to find.”
Weiss said in the interview with Entertainment Weekly, “If we shot The Red Wedding and nobody got emotional, it would be a failure.”
George R.R. Martin, the author who wrote the books that inspired the HBO series, once said in an interview that the “Red Wedding” scene was inspired by the real-life Black Dinner, which took place in 1440 in Scotland. William Douglas, the 6th Earl of Douglas, visited 10-year-old King James II of Scotland for a dinner. After the dinner, the entire Douglas clan was executed after a mock trial.
