Nebraska man kills himself after abducting estranged wife
A 38-year-old Nebraska woman was found unharmed by authorities not long before her estranged husband allegedly shot and killed himself.
The Associated Press reported on Monday that Julie Hanes was being treated at a hospital in Imperial, Nebraska, 300 miles away from the Lincoln hair salon where Dwayne Lawrence allegedly took her at gunpoint 30 hours earlier.
Lawrence’s body was found in a cornfield an hour after Hanes was found unharmed, and his car was discovered nearby. Hanes reportedly filed for divorce on July 30, 2013.
Lawrence was also charged with false imprisonment, making threats and using a weapon to commit crimes stemming from a July 8 confrontation during which he threatened to kill himself in front of her to goad her into doing the same. Eight days later, Lawrence posted $25,000 bond and was ordered to stay away from both Hanes and firearms.
