Florida gym teacher fired for punching middle-school girl in face
A north Florida gym teacher was fired this month after an investigation found that he’d punched a female student in the face.
The Florida Times-Union reported Thursday that a Duval County Public Schools investigation showed Michael Lewis Green struck the middle-schooler with his fist after she shoved him in the chest.
Green was trying to remove the girl from the gymnasium because she was cursing and shouting at another student, school officials said.
Surveillance video shows Green placing his hand on the student’s shoulder as she walked away from him, the newspaper reported, and then she turns around and pushes him.
Green was arrested after the incident, and a court date has been set for Oct. 3.
He was hired in February 2002 and recently worked at Eugene Butler Middle School, the paper reported.
Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said Green, as the adult, should have tried to calm the student or called security instead of escalating the situation.
The student was not seriously hurt and returned to school, the paper reported.
