Scott Walker aide behind ‘Black Friday’ fundraiser fired for racist tweets
In the second misstep by his re-election campaign within 24 hours, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) fired a top staffer on Tuesday for a series of offensive online remarks targeting Latinos.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported that Walker’s campaign terminated 23-year-old deputy finance director Taylor Palmisano after the Journal-Sentinel brought to light Twitter posts in 2011 complaining about Mexican immigrants. Palmisano subsequently deleted her Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Palmisano was also identified earlier in the day as the source of an email sent to prospective campaign donors to skip buying their children Christmas gifts and instead contribute to Walker’s re-election bid in order to “save your children from a future of double-digit tax increases and billion dollar budget deficits.”
“I will choke that illegal mex cleaning in the library,” Palmisano wrote on Twitter in March 2011. “Stop banging [expletive] chairs around and turn off your Walkman.”
In January 2011, Palmisano, who served as an intern on Walker’s campaign for six months before her promotion, also complained about Latinos on Twitter while riding a bus from Pasadena, California to Las Vegas, Nevada.
“This bus is my worst (expletive) nightmare,” she wrote at the time. “Nobody speaks English & these ppl [sic] dont know how 2 control their kids #only3morehours #illegalaliens.”
UPI reported that Palmisano issued a statement apologizing for her remarks, while a spokesperson for Walker’s campaign, Jonathan Wetzel, confirmed her ouster in a separate statement.
“Both the Governor, and the campaign, condemn these insulting remarks which do not reflect our views in any way,” Wetzel was quoted as saying.
This past August, Walker — considered a possible Republican presidential contender in 2016 — also fired Steven Krieser from his position of assistant deputy secretary for the state Department of Transportation, after Krieser was caught calling undocumented immigrants a “stream of wretched criminals” on his Facebook page.
