Jon Stewart blasts cable anchors panicking over legal pot: ‘You’re a f*cking idiot’
Jon Stewart opened The Daily Show on Tuesday by pointing out the hypocrisy of cable news anchors who are acting aghast over Colorado’s decision to legalize marijuana, pointing to data suggesting that alcohol — a legal intoxicant — is more harmful to a teenager’s brain than what Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy called, “getting potted up on weed.”
“Your argument against marijuana, it would carry a lot more weight if these same individuals had a similar perspective on America’s alcohol usage,” Stewart said, before showing a clip of Doocy declaring on-air, “I’m gonna get real drunk” during a montage of network morning shows freely promoting drinking.
While marijuana is always presented as a “gateway drug” to a bad road, Stewart argued, beer is always shown in commercials depicting it as having near-magical properties.
“Rest assured, our children will never be exposed to this potentally overstated fantasy world that glorifies alcohol consumption,” Stewart said. “Unless they watch TV.”
Stewart also took on “grumpalodeon” Bill O’Reilly for his bizarre attempt to link marijuana smoking to text messaging and Internet use, in which O’Reilly declared pot use to be “literally Russian Roulette.”
“I think the only difference between a bong hit and pointing a loaded gun at your own skull is that the gun can kill you instantly, and must never be criminalized or restricted in any way ever,” Stewart said ironically.
But when O’Reilly faced pushback from neuroscientist Carl Hart, Stewart observed, he fell back on the old Fox trick of calling in-house psychiatrist Keith Ablow to rail against the “texting-industrial complex.”
“I guess I could say, you’re a f*cking idiot,” Stewart said of Ablow.
