Lindsey Graham drops hyperbolic bombshell: ‘The world is literally about to blow up’
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) dropped a hyperbolic bombshell following the State of the Union Address.
“The world is literally about to blow up,” Graham said, adding that he completely disagrees with President Barack Obama’s policy on Iran.
The remarks were first reported by Roll Call.
In his address, the president pledged to veto sanctions imposed by legislation while negotiations continued over Iran’s nuclear program, and Graham complained that Obama failed to adequately assess the Middle East dynamic.
“The world as I know was not remotely described by the president,” Graham said. “Syria is a contagion.”
“Explain to me what happens if the Syrian conflict goes on another year and (President Bashar al-) Assad continues to win,” said Graham, who brought “Duck Dynasty” reality show co-star Korie Robertson to the speech as his guest. “Iraq is disintegrating. The whole region is moving toward chaos, and we’re doing nothing. We’re talking about limiting drones?”
“I hope [Obama] will leave a residual force in Afghanistan [so] they can do the job, because if he doesn’t, it will fall apart at a faster pace than Iraq,” Graham said.
The Republican senator advocates keeping a support force in Afghanistan beyond 2014.
As Talking Points Memo pointed out, Graham has outlined apocalyptic scenarios before to push his foreign policy agenda, such as when Obama called for an eventual end to the war on terrorism.
“Our allies are more afraid than I have ever seen,” Graham warned at the time. “I support the concepts that the president talked about in many ways, but if he does not change his policy, the Middle East is going to blow up and we are going to hit again here at home to matter how hard we try.”
