Stray bullet kills 5-year-old relative of Omaha councilman while she eats breakfast
Police in Omaha have vowed to find the person who fired the bullet that killed a 5-year-old girl while she was eating breakfast this week.
According to the Omaha World-Herald, Payton Benson was eating breakfast Wednesday morning when a bullet fired from a block away came through the wall of her home. She was taken to Alegent Creighton Medical Center in critical condition where she later died.
Benson is the daughter of City Councilman Ben Gray’s nephew.
“Bullets know no boundaries, they know no target, they are going to land where they land,” Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday.
Investigators determined that about 20 shots were fired during a gunfight about a block away from Benson’s home. Police released surveillance photos of three men standing next to a black Jeep. A $5,000 reward was offered for information that helps solve the case. Anyone with information was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 444-STOP.
“What I heard was just massive amounts of gunfire,” neighbor Nick Todd told WOWT. “Both guns had to be completely unloaded. Uh, it, both guns were very large guns. They weren’t small guns.”
“Enough of the gang violence, and enough with the random shootings,” Schmaderer said. “I promise this family and I promise this community that my homicide investigators, my gang investigators, will work around the clock, leaving no stone unturned to solve this homicide.”
Community leaders had planned a prayer walk and a press conference for Thursday.
