‘Words matter’: Kansas City nightclub promises not to ‘rape’ customers with drink prices
A Missouri nightclub has drawn heavy criticism for social media posts that joked about rape to promote New Year’s Eve drink specials.
An employee of Aura Kansas City posted the same message Tuesday on the club’s Twitter and Facebook pages to advertise its holiday alcohol prices.
“HOT ANNOUNCEMENT: AURA introduces the anti-rape program… We won’t RAPE you on prices on NYE on ‘all inclusives’ where they run out of liquor at 11pm hahaha,” the posts said.
Within an hour, reported KCTV, the Facebook post had drawn more than 160 comments and the tweet had been heavily shared and discussed on Twitter.
“This is disgusting,” said one post on Twitter. “Rape is not an advertising tool, morons! It is a horrific, invasive, violent act!”
A Facebook user said, “words matter,” pointing out that “rape isn’t a joke, or even a colorful word.”
Employees removed the Facebook post about an hour after it went up, and the club deleted its Twitter account by 7 p.m.
The club’s owner said he would take responsibility for the posts, although he did not write them or share them.
“Bottom line is, I own the bar,” said nightclub owner Stuart Solomon. “I will take responsibility for anything my members put out, and someone made a horrible mistake. Obviously, I think we all know they did not mean for the connotation this was taken in, but they should have obviously chose their words much more wisely.”
Solomon declined to identify the employee who wrote the post, but the owner said he would handle social media for the club himself in the future.
