Kansas investigators release video of firefighter’s deadly brawl with police officer
On Dec 1 of last year, Kansas City police officer Donald Hubbard, who was off-duty but in uniform working as a security guard, became involved in an altercation between newlywed Anthony Bruno and a cab driver over a fare dispute following his wedding reception.
Following officer Hubbard’s intervention, Bruno ran off only to be brought to the ground two blocks away by Hubbard.
In the video (seen below), which was shot by observers on their cellphone and has edited by the Kansas City Star to silence some strong language, Hubbard can be seen holding Bruno down and attempting to put handcuffs on him.
When Bruno pulls his hands away, Hubbard appears to knee him in the head at which point Bruno managed to get on top of the police officer and begins to pummel his head on the ground.
“Hey, don’t fight the cop, don’t fight the cop!” one of the onlookers can be heard shouting in the video, right before the camera’s angle changes and two gunshots are heard.
Hubbard, explaining that he feared for his life, told investigators: “He was on top of me and I was in an extremely vulnerable position, and I was exhausted from the struggle with the suspect.”
“I don’t know how many times he struck me, but I started to black out and saw lines across my eyes,” he stated. “He continued to strike me and I started to lose consciousness, and I believed the suspect was not going to stop hitting me until he killed me. I feared for my life and I drew my weapon, fired two shots center mass.”
Bruno was hit both times and pronounced dead at a local hospital.
A Jackson County grand jury cleared Hubbard of wrongdoing in the death this month.
