Neil de Grasse Tyson explains why there is no center of the universe
The universe has no center, said Neil de Grasse Tyson.
The astrophysicist was asked on his “Star Talk” syndicated radio show if it would be possible to find the center of the universe, and locate where the Big Bang occurred, by determining which direction the universe was expanding.
But Tyson said that was impossible, because the universe was expanding in every direction.
“The best analogy I can think of is, if you inflate a balloon, everybody on the surface of that balloon is expanding,” he said.
Tyson said it would impossible to determine the center of that hypothetical balloon’s surface in the same way it would be impossible to detect a center of the earth’s surface.
“There’s certain geometries where there is no center, even though it can be expanding, and the universe is one such shape,” he said.
