NC billboards suggest Jesus wants ‘holy war’ with gays over ‘sexual perversion’
Billboards in one small western North Carolina town have residents asking if Jesus wants a “holy war” against LGBT people because of their “sexual perversion.”
WLOS reported that residents of Clyde began noticing the bright red and white billboards last week.
“Coexist, tolerance, sexual perversion?” one billboard asks. “God says ‘NO!'”
The billboards also quote Bible verses from Revelation, Isaiah and Corinthians. The passage from Revelation warns about a church that has been so severely compromised by sexual immorality that he shows them a sword, and threatens divine judgement. Many Christians believe that the Corinthians passage also condemns homosexuality.
“Be not deceived, neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves… shall inherit the kingdom of God,” the verse says.
Clyde resident Michelle Grosse told WLOS that the signs were actually unchristian because they promoted intolerance.
“Love your neighbor as yourself,” she explained. “And this is saying, no coexistence, not tolerance. And of course, we love that whole perversion sin because it’s so easy to identify.”
“This almost sounds as though this is a call for a holy war,” Grosse pointed out. “I mean, if we’re not to tolerate, and we’re not to coexist, what are we supposed to do? Wipe out the infidel?”
But many of the people in Clyde that WLOS spoke to approved of the billboards.
“I think if they want to complain about something, complain about something that really needs to be fixed,” resident Allen Thornburg said. “That don’t need to be fixed. That needs to stay up there.”
