Stephen Colbert: ISIS isn’t just invading Iraq — it wants to radicalize your hashtags
Tuesday night on The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert warned viewers of the danger the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) poses to social media.
Colbert began by playing a clip of a Fox News analyst who declared that, “it’s clear that among the social media competition among terrorists, [ISIS] is winning.”
ISIS “is huge on Instagram,” Colbert responded. “They’ve got one filter to make all the photos seem like they’re from the 1970s, and another that makes all their ideas seem like they’re from the 7th Century.”
“And watch out for this folks,” he warned, “because they are deviously piggy-backing on Twitter trends to spread their message, sharing pro-Isis content with the hashtag #WorldCup2014.”
“Watch for that! Do not click on any links from ISIS that say, ‘check out this amazing header,’ because it’s not soccer!”
“And,” Colbert continued, “ISIS is even T-mobilizing their followers with an ISIS app for Android phones called ‘The Dawn of Glad Tidings.’ It’s perfect for any mujahideen who are bored with playing ‘Fruit Extremist.'”
“Nation, we cannot allow ISIS to conquer the Twitter-sphere. Fortunately, there is a sure-fire way to destroy something from becoming popular on social media — we must get ISIS’s moms to join.”
