Jon Stewart slams U.S. ‘Oprah’ doctrine in Middle East: ‘Everybody gets some bombs!’
Daily Show host Jon Stewart delved into the complications on Tuesday of the United States trying to spread peace through the Middle East in part by selling weapons across the region.
“We’re like the Oprah of Middle East weapons systems,” he said. “You get some bombs! You get some bombs! Everybody gets some bombs!”
Stewart argued that the U.S. has “peaced” countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and several others around the area “to the hilt” with billions of dollars worth of weaponry including missiles and attack helicopters.
“You may be thinking to yourself, ‘Jeez, all this buildup of peace on Earth might set off alarms on Venus,'” Stewart said. “It’s okay, we’ll send them missiles, too, f*ck it, I don’t care. Just not to Mars. Because as we know, they don’t need missiles — they need moms.”
But the problem with the U.S. playing “Johnny Missileseed,” Stewart said, was the risk of the weapons falling into unintended hands, as was the case in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“It’s a good thing we flooded our allies with sophisticated weapons, because they’re gonna need them to fend off all our other sophisticated weapons,” he said.
Even more worryingly, he found, Qatar — another one of those beneficiaries — was selling $400 million in arms to Hamas.
“What the f*ck, Qatar?” Stewart said. “We just sold you $11 billion in arms. You better not be re-gifting. Are you re-gifting?”
