Georgia man arrested for planting homemade bomb under his ex-girlfriend’s car
A 28-year-old Georgia man was arrested for allegedly planting a homemade bomb at the home his ex-girlfriend shares with her current partner, WSB-TV reported on Friday.
Ryan Michael Derose was charged with making terroristic threats and possession of a destructive device after authorities in Gwinnett County found the materials used to make the crude device at his home earlier this month. He allegedly put the bomb — a can filled with lighter fluid and shotgun shells, wrapped in black electrical tape and placed inside a blue container — under an SUV belonging to his ex-girlfriend.
The woman’s mother, Sandy Beckner, told WSB that she found the bomb under the vehicle, and suspected its purpose before dismissing the possibility as too far-fetched and moving it out of the driveway. Police later tested the device and said it would have exploded as planned if anyone had triggered it.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Derose argued the woman’s current boyfriend, Jacob Powell, the night before the bomb was found. A police report stated that Powell told Derose that “if he has a problem, they should settle it like men.”
“If you hear a loud noise in the middle of the night, just know it is not about you,” Derose allegedly replied.
