Black student attacked by men yelling racial slurs days after racist threats made against Oregon college
A black student was attacked by a group of white men yelling racial slurs — just days after racist threats were made on social media against his Oregon college.
Portland police said the 26-year-old student was confronted and beaten by three men shortly before 9 p.m. Friday near the swimming pool at Lewis and Clark College.
The student said the men called him racial epithets and then attacked him, but he managed to run away and was not seriously injured.
He described the assailants as college-age white men.
Police are investigating whether the incident is connected to racially charged threats made last week on the Yik Yak social media network, which allows anonymous comments to be shared with other users in a nearby geographic area.
“You are allowing coloreds in the chapel now,” read one comment, and another message showed a gun.
Several students around the U.S. have been arrested for making racist threats on Yik Yak, which turns over user data to law enforcement, in recent weeks.
