Snoop Dogg just told his fans to boycott History Channel’s ‘Roots’ reboot — here’s why
The remake of Roots has earned wide acclaim from critics so far, but rapper Snoop Dogg isn’t having any of it. In an Instagram video posted on Monday, Snoop said that he’s sick and tired of watching movies and TV shows that depict the brutal treatment of black Americans when they were slaves hundreds of years ago.
“I’m sick of this shit. How the fuck are they going to put Roots on, on Memorial Day?” a somber Snoop asked in his video. “They going to just to keep beating that shit into our heads about how they did us, huh?”
He then went on to urge creators to make more TV shows and movies that show us what it’s like to be a black person in 2016 instead of in 1816. He also said that it was important to make movies that don’t just show black people’s struggles, but also their successes too.
“I ain’t watching that shit… fuck them television shows,” he said. “Let’s create our own shit based on today, how we live and how we inspire people today. Black is what’s real. Fuck that old shit.”
While it’s important to remember the horrible things that happened in the past, Snoop’s point that there should be more shows and movies based on the modern black experience is definitely worth considering.
