WATCH: Journalist Roland Martin torches Snoop Dogg’s call to boycott History Channel’s ‘Roots’ reboot
Earlier this week, rap icon Snoop Dogg raised some eyebrows when he told his fans to not watch the History Channel’s new remake of Roots. Snoop’s rationale was that too many shows and movies about black Americans deal with past struggles against evils such as slavery and segregation, which is why he’d like to see more movies about the lives of the black American experience today.
Roland Martin wasn’t having any of it, however, and he torched Snoop for not appreciating a great piece of art that depicted important moments in black Americans’ history.
“You will never find somebody Jewish who says, ‘You know what, there’s way too many Holocaust films. Can we just move on, can we just stop bringing up the Holocaust?'” Martin said, before reading off a list of Holocaust movies produced in the last 10 years.
Martin also took issue with Snoop’s claim that there aren’t enough people making movies and shows about black Americans today by pointing out that Snoop Dogg’s contribution to the film world comes from producing porn flicks.
“Why don’t you stop smoking weed, and actually bother to call Will Packer or Ava DuVernay, or call Spike Lee or the countless African-Americans who are out there who are trying to make those films, and are looking for folks like you who are gonna put their money where their mouth is, as opposed to the money on some good weed,” he chided.
