As predicted, a spate of editorials, articles and reflections have showered President Ronald Reagan with paeans to his leadership. They claim that he was the most popular president, forgetting that President Clinton had a far higher approval rating and a much better approval rating in his last two years (Reagan slumped after Iran Contra). They may also have forgotten that Reagan raised taxes, adjusted for inflation, at a higher rate than Clinton, or that, unlike Bush, he backtracked on his tax cuts when they became economically untenable.
