Independent bookstores can develop loyal customers by protecting their privacy! Amazon and every other big corporation is doing everything they can to track customers buying habits, email addresses, credit history, accounts, and personal information. This information on us is bought and sold by other corporations, government agencies, and god knows who else. Independents should offer an alternative of confidence as a service.

Good point bookbuyer
A local bookstore has long standing employees who know their customers. Their database is in their head and in their heart. As long as they treat their employees well, they keep their database in-house.

I have all but stopped going to bookstores in the last ten years, because of the corporate feel of the major stores and their merchandising of garbage books too numerous to mention, although the names O'Reilly and Coulter do come to mind. Even university presses are publishing cookbooks and even sillier titles, going for the goonish lifestyles market. You know, the one that turned everyone into cigar, wine, and mustard experts overnight--or, actually, with each successive breezy magazine article or "best stuff" book. Yecchhhh!!
