E Timor
This is not 20/20 hindsight. Ford and Kissinger knew they had the power to disuade Indonesia from invading East Timor. Indonesia was dependent on U.S. weaponry and it should ahve been cut off after the invasion as required by law and treaty. Instead, Ford, followed by Carter and their successors kept the weapons flowing and the killing continued. See www.etan.org for more on the East Timor and Ford and Kissinger's sordid role.

John - Please name me some leaders of the US in the last 50 years that are actually good people and served this country honorably and had its best interest at heart.

Wow.
Well, that changes my opinion of Ford. But then AJ's right. They are all evil. Every last one of 'em. Clinton did nothing about East Timor. They're all slime.... the Carlyle Group fascists...

I guess you could point out that at least Ford didn't kill as many people as say Reagon. Perhaps that should be on his gravemarker.

It is bullshit when people say communism is oppressive. The thing is yes they are, but they have no choice. Look at what happned in panama, chile, nicaragua, and guatemala. They did not follow the cuban path of getting rid of the opposition and clamping down on dissenters. So they US changed their government.

Come on
Let the man lay dead. Of course he was "Pro-Invasion"-all the bankers/advisors who sit as presidents can't wait to fund a war and produce mass wealth. Americas next president will have another war too-we have had over 200 Armed Conflicts in our bloody white-washed history-enough already?

John at 17:49:06- Well said. In the New York Times editorial concerning Gerald Ford's presidency, there was not one word concerning Ford's approval of Indonesia invading East Timor and the subsequent slaughter of the Timorese people. So much for the Times' slogan: "All the News That is Fit To Print."

The reason that the Washington crowd loves Ford? He's the perfect example of "consensus" and "bipartisanship," which translate as "mutual cover story" and "no deep party differences." He was a heck of a nice guy; but nice guys don't make changes for the better. Like AJ said, the people who get into the White House are the ones who go along to get along. We the people never voted on allowing Indonesia to massacre East Timorese.
