Print This Email This Over a thousand words have been added to the online edition for the Oxford English Dictionary, including the name of the strip joint owned by HBO's mob boss Tony Soprano, RAW STORY has learned.
"The Bada-Bing, Tony Soprano's gentlemens club on the hit TV show, often attracts the attention of the Five-O," begins a press release announcing the additions. "Bada-bing, Five-O, and over a thousand other words have also attracted the attention of the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary."
According to OED, "bada-bing" is defined as "suggesting something
happening suddenly, emphatically, or easily and predictably," and dates back to 1965, as cited "in comedy routines, major newspapers, CBS News,
the New Yorker, Esquire, and The Godfather."
"The English language changes and evolves all the time and the Oxford
English Dictionary has to keep up," OED's Editor at Large
Jesse Sheidlower said in the press release. "Our editors are currently going through the entire alphabet bit by bit, writing new entries and revising existing ones in order to stay current."
Other words added include "plumber's crack," Wi-Fi, "Islamophobia," "carpet bombing," "Disneyfication," "gay-friendly," and "hard-ass."
A full list of the words added on September 14th can be read at this link.
