Mel Gibson has criticized the Iraq War while promoting his new movie, "Apocalypto," about the collapse of Mayan civilization.

At a film festival in Texas, Gibson said, "The precursors to a civilization that's going under are the same, time and time again," making a comparison between the situation portrayed in his movie and the trends he sees in America. He asked, "What's human sacrifice, if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?"

In the following MSNBC video, Jill Dobson, editor for Style Magazine, suggests that Gibson's comments are an attempt to publicize his new movie. "Of course, it's about movie promotion," Dobson says, "He knows that a lot of people may be upset about the statements he reportedly made about Jewish people. So, he's like, 'wow, I'm going to get out there and talk about my movie'--but he has an interesting way of doing it. In general, he's avoiding reporters, but when he does speak out he says this, which is a pretty controversial thing to say. You would think he would just say, 'It's a great film, go see it.'"
