Print This Email This Herman Cain, a member of the Wal-Mart advocacy group Working Families for Wal-Mart, is under fire for a column that compares prominent Democrats to Hezbollah guerillas.
Cain, an African-American businessman and radio show host, yesterday posted a column at the opinion website Townhall.com in which he tagged potential 2008 Democratic presidential candidates, among them Sens. Hilary Clinton (D-NY) and Joe Biden (D-DE), as "Hezbocrats ... determined to take down Wal-Mart." Cain uses the expression "Hezbocrats" a dozen times throughout the column.
"Hezbocrats risk a huge political backlash by drawing horns and a tail on Wal-Mart’s trademark yellow happy face," Cain warns. He concludes the column with a message to voters, urging them not to support Democratic efforts to unionize Wal-Mart workers. The column in full is here.
Cain, former president and CEO of the National Restaurant Association, sought to fill the seat of retiring U.S. Senator Zell Miller (D-GA) in 2004 but lost in the Republican primary.
A union-supported activist group, Wake Up Wal-Mart, called on Wal-Mart in a press release today to denounce Cain and "end its association with the cadre of right-wing operatives it currently employs under the made up name of Working Families for Wal-Mart." The press release is available here.
Wal-Mart has yet to address the latest situation, which comes in the wake of Andrew Young's resignation from another Wal-Mart advocacy group after he made controversial remarks to the Los Angeles Sentinel regarding ethnic grocers.
