"You had to get up pretty early in the morning to keep up with Bob Ney, the former congressman from Ohio who will be sentenced today on corruption charges," the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes Friday. "To match his drinking, you had to be up by 7:30 a.m." Excerpts follow:

Ney has blamed alcoholism for his aberrant behavior, which included taking bribes from a lobbyist, but the extent of his drinking became clear only Thursday, when pre-sentencing letters from former aides and friends were filed in U.S. District Court in Washington.

“Bob was a functioning alcoholic who could rarely make it through the day without drinking and would often begin drinking beers as early as 7:30 a.m.,” said a letter from Matthew Parker, his former staffer and campaign manager. Parker described Ney as a reformed man who now goes to as many as three recovery meetings a day.

Ney’s lawyer, Mark Tuohey, submitted the letters to make the case that Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle should send Ney to a residential drug and alcohol abuse treatment program when she sentences him on charges of conspiracy and making false statements.
