'Self-described pedophile' removes photos of Obama's daughters after senator's attorney writes letter
Investigative website The Smoking Gun reported today on a letter it obtained that was sent by lawyers for Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) to a "self-described pedophile" website operator demanding that pictures of the 2008 presidential candidate's daughters be removed from the site.
The website purports to evaluate the "cuteness" of the daughters and granddaughters of 2008 presidential candidates, and its owner, Lindsay Ashford, claims to "have been bestowed with the gift of girllove."
In the letter, Obama campaign general counsel Robert Bauer demands that Ashford remove the pictures as well as any reference or link to the Obama website. "Your actions are particularly objectionable -- if not outright dangerous -- because you have included a picture of Senator Obama's young daughters on a site advocating pedophilia with young girls, heightening the risk they face," wrote Bauer. "This is not simply defamatory, but it is a criminal act."
According to The Smoking Gun, the website operator has removed the pictures but continues to link to Obama's website and refer to Obama and his family.
One right-wing blog had harsh criticism for the site in question, despite Obama being a Democrat.
"Family is one of those things that should be out of bounds in politics," wrote Harold C. Hutchison at The Strata-Sphere. "I don't care if it's Mary Cheney and her private life, Barack Obama's children, or Jenna Bush having a beer. You keep kids out of it. This doubly applies to stuff that is illegal, not to mention disgusting and perverted.
"Quite frankly, I think Barack Obama let these folks off light," Hutchison said.
The NY Daily News reports that the "online sicko" is pulling for former Senator John Edwards (D-NC) in 2008, based on his "handicapping system."
"Ashford endorses Sen. John Edwards, because of his 'adorable' 8-year-old daughter, Emma Claire, and praises ex-Gov. Mitt Romney's 'gorgeous granddaughter,'" Helen Kennedy reported for the Daily News. "'Revolting . . . [the] very idea is absolutely revolting,' Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said of the site."
