Los Angeles- The musical Dreamgirls won a leading eight Oscar nominations Tuesday but missed out for best picture as rosters for the film prizes were read by actress Selma Hayek and Sid Gannis, president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
Babel, which already won the Golden Globe for best dramatic picture, garnered seven nominations. It is considered a leading contender for the best-picture prize, where it will compete with Clint Eastwood's Japanese-language war film Letters from Iwo Jima, the dysfunctional family comedy Little Miss Sunshine, crime drama The Departed and the British royal saga The Queen.
"Al Gore may have lost the 2000 presidential election by the slimmest of margins, but the former vice president is hoping his critically acclaimed movie on global warming, 'An Inconvenient Truth,' experiences a different fate at the upcoming Oscars," reports CNN. "The movie received two Oscar nods Tuesday -- one for best documentary and one for best original song: Melissa Etheridge's "I Need to Wake Up."."
Up for best director are Martin Scorsese for The Departed, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for Babel, Eastwood for Letters from Iwo Jima, Stephen Frears for The Queen and Paul Greengrass for United 93.
The best actress nominees are Penelope Cruz for Volver, Meryl Streep for The Devil Wears Prada, Helen Mirren for The Queen, Kate Winslet for Little Children and Judi Dench for Notes on a Scandal.
The best actor nominees are Leonardo DiCaprio for Blood Diamond, Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson, Peter O'Toole for Venus, Will Smith for The Pursuit of Happyness and Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland.
The Oscars are to be presented on February 25.
