Washington- The US military has tested a heat ray gun that produces an intolerable heating sensation on the skin designed to repel enemies or disperse hostile crowds without using lethal force, the Pentagon said Thursday. The device, called the Active Denial System, sits on top of a military vehicle and unleashes an invisible beam at the speed of light that penetrates the skin by less than a millimetre but enough to cause pain sensors to react.

"The effects are extremely sudden, and natural instincts automatically force you to quickly exit the target area," Staff Sergeant Jason Delacruz, an operator of the system who has also been exposed, told military reporters.

The military maintains that the heat beam is harmless and that those exposed to it do not suffer long term consequences. It was developed over a period of 12 years, and will start being produced over the next several years.
