This afternoon, the Army Corps of Engineers opened the floodgates on the Morganza Spillway, diverting Mississippi floodwaters away from New Orleans and into farmlands and rural communities. The decision will cause thousands of homes and businesses to be inundated with water, but will ease the pressure of the swollen Mississippi on the region’s overtaxed levees.
