Social security has a long term financing problem that can be fixed pretty easily.  Eliminate the earnings ceiling for FICA taxes.  Make a sane policy for legalizing undocumented immigrants and enforce minimum wage standards for them.  That will do it.

Please tell of a private investment scheme that attaches at every job, FT or PT, that a person holds his entire life, without paperwork, has an 80 year dividend of over 4%, has never missed or lowered a payment, requires no minimum investment, does not involve broker or private investment company fees, has a lower expense than .20%, no sales charges, and is backed by the full faith and credit of the US Federal Government. A prudent investor loves his/her retirement savings secured by the federal government’s taxing power. If private industry could compete with Social Security, Koch’s would have no reason to attack it. 

Assumption: The Koch brothers, “already billionaires, have no personal interest in ending social security.”  Fact is, as billionaires with professional economists who have determined SS is “actuarily bankrupt,” Koch’s know how much people take home after social security deductions. With SS privatized, Koch’s would adjust salaries accordingly. They would pocket even more billions. So Koch’s have enormous personal interest in ending SS.

Social Security no more prevents a person from investing in a personal retirement account than the retirement age prevents a person from continuing to work after age 65.  Additionally, with SS, an investor can be slightly more risky in his/her long term investment choices. If SS is “privatized” as Koch’s would have it, a prudent investment adviser would factor that risk into a diverse portfolio. If a fund existed that did exactly what SS does, an investment adviser would recommend it.  I’d personally rather my money go to Bernie Sanders. People have a personal right to redress grievances with Sanders. Koch would sue for slander, invasion of privacy, or trespass.

If the GOP gets it’s way by not allowing the US gov’t to raise the deficit ceiling, just like their chimp Bush did 10 times, then there will be problems with these US Treasury securities being “backed by the full faith and credit of the US government.” A situation where the GOP is yet again threatening the stability of the entire US and all its citizens at a level of the worst terrorists in the middle east merely for their own political gain.

You’re just too much of a block head to even converse with. It doesn’t say ‘a secret mountain of cash nor ‘IOUs’ and the quote is from 2 people who know a hell of a lot more than some bozo name ‘comet67′. 

It’s my understanding that the Social Security trust invested that money into U.S. treasuries. Yes, that money was then used in the general fund to reduce taxes on the wealthy, but to say that those treasuries are just I.O.U.’s implying that they will not be honored when they mature is insane. That would be the same as a default. You know, the same effect as not raising the debt ceiling.

The wealthy know how those treasuries will have to be honored: higher taxes for them. That is why they are spending all this money trying to convince everyone else (they have with you already) that Social Security is broke.

Quite honestly, even after 20+ years in the American workforce, I would be more than willing to just cut my losses and walk away from the program entirely, free to keep the fruits of my labor to save, invest, or otherwise dispose of in a way that I see fit.

Shit – when’s the last time Social Security recipients got a COLA increase? The seventies? Early 80s? And how much was it? Three percent? Big deal. You’d be better off dumping the yearly amount paid into Social Security into long-term CDs and living off that when you get old.

I’d be more prone to say that the Government has declared a war of greed against the middle class.

Sit back and think about it – actually think – for one minute: How much of every dollar that you earn goes towards various taxes? Income tax; sales tax; sin tax; property tax; gas tax.. the list is endless.

I’d be willing to bet, off the top of my head, that every dollar you earn at whatever you do for a living, is really only 20 cents that you actually get to use and circulate in the economy. The greedy government is there with its dirty hands, skimming a little bit here, a little bit there, every time you make a move.
