Seven years ago, Ameneh Bahrani was blinded and disfigured when a suitor, Majid Movaheti threw acid in her face. The attack came after the young woman had rejected Movaheti’s advances.

Under Iranian law, victims of some violent crimes may choose the method of their attacker’s punishment. At the last minute, Bahrani stayed the order to have her former suitor also blinded by acid, but is still seeking financial reparations for the costs incurred by her hospitalization and subsequent corrective surgeries.
