Three couples took center stage — literally — Monday, a day after same-sex marriages became legal in New York. The couples were married onstage during the Broadway musical “Hair,” where they received a standing ovation and were serenaded by hundreds of cast and audience members with the memorable hit song “Let the Sunshine In,” from the show’s libretto.

One of the actors officiated over the ceremonies, and said the musical’s themes of progress and equality fit perfectly with the historic occasion.

“I never thought this day would come,” said one of the newlyweds, by his husband’s side.
