Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head by a gunman in January, received a standing ovation when she appeared in the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday. She voted for a deal to avert U.S. default and cut the federal deficit.
“The Capitol looks beautiful and I am honored to be at work tonight,” she tweeted after the vote had concluded.
Speaking on the House floor, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) described Giffords as “the personification of courage, of sincerity, of admiration throughout the country.”
“Her presence today to make sure that we meet the obligations of our great country is important and symbolic,” Pelosi said.
